Mr. Clubb is a soft spoken, talented Christian artist who loves his work. He spoke with TWS students about what his life is like as an artist. For the majority of his career, Mr. Clubb worked for a Chicago advertising agency as a staff artist and our children were able to see examples of story boards he created while working there. Mr. Clubb explained to the children that as an artist he would collaborate with art directors at the agency to create the story boards. He was responsible for putting the art director's ideas into pictures. Although now retired from the advertising agency, Mr. Clubb still enjoys working as an artist and creating special fine art pieces with an emphasis on painting and sculpture. Take a look at his work at www.rickclubb.com and explore his immense talent.
Mr. Clubb shared with the children that because of his faith in Jesus Christ his life's perspective is one which is hopeful and optimistic. He expresses this perspective through his work by choosing each day to spend time on artistic pieces that clearly reflect the positive outlook developed by his faith. In addition, Mr. Clubb encouraged the TWS students to always draw and design using their own imaginations.
Mr. Clubb then promptly put each student's imagination to work by asking the children to pretend they were being transported back in time to medieval Britain. After briefly retelling the story of King Arthur, Mr. Clubb "commissioned" the children to design statues, shields, flags and fountains from the time of King Arthur. TWS students learned about the special meanings of images and colors in medieval art and then incorporated this information into sketches of their own design ideas. Working in conjunction with Mr. Clubb, the students then directed his "on-the-spot" drawing by communicating their imaginative ideas to him. Together they developed new and meaningful pictures of monuments and icons, as shown below, for their own fictitious medieval town.
Our children learned a great deal about the power of images, the meaning that color can convey in art and the excitement that comes with using your imagination to create something new. Through sharing his personal experience and helping to simulate a "job experience," Mr. Clubb was able to allow the TWS students to feel for themselves what it is like to work as an artist today. It was both educational and very fun! Thank you Mr. Clubb!
